Please sign up for the classes you would like to attend. Be sure you have cleared the time with your supervisor before you sign up. Classes are scheduled every two hours, and many will be repeated, so note the time period you are signing up for. You will be notified if you have been accepted into the class.

Alternative story forms
Goal: More direct, engaging, informative, break the mold in storytelling.
Using story form guide, cover what alternative story forms are and what works in these formats and why. Exercises might include dissecting some that work, reformatting the same story in a variety of formats.

Faces in the news: getting people in our stories
Goal: Break the mold on local coverage
Description: Finding and writing stories that connect with readers.

Mastering the 1A process
Goal: Aim for excellence that serves the reader
Description: Learn how to drive a story to 1A from conception to execution.

News graphics Goal: Providing key facts and context in a clear and focused manner
Description: Learn strategies for getting technical information and numbers out of stories and into graphics. Learn which graphic types are best for conveying specific types of information and how to work collaboratively with graphic artists. Also, writin g effective graphic requests. Designed for reporters, editors, copy editors.

The Long and short of it
Goal: More direct, engaging, informative, break the mold in storytelling.
Description: Learn which types of stories are long and which work better as short stories. Practice cutting stories and cutting again. Learn why short stories are hard to write.

The purpose-driven beat
Goal: Breaking the mold, being less institutional
Description: Study best practices of some of our top beat reporters. Learn how to build a foundation with topics, key people, how to start reporting from different places, how to look at your beat differently. Topics may include 10 people to call, 10 plac es to go, seeing the big picture on the beat, saying no to routine stories, diversity, asking why, why, why.

Goal: Recognizing changes in how people read and learn
Description: Learn about effective writing and storytelling for the web.
